Sorry all - I have had to modify the comments section (again) to only allow registered users to make comments.  I am just being bombarded with spam again and it takes too much time to weed through all of the junk messages.  I will leave it like this for a while and then change it back - I just need a break!

Squirrels! In My Car!

Another Critter Story: Squirrels Part 1:

DD and I spent most of the day working in the flowers beds.  It was truly spring here (finally) and we were making the most of it.  We decided to take a walk down to the lake.  For those of you with toddlers, you know that taking a walk can turn into an afternoon picking dandelions, finding acorns, or just dragging feet.

We were gone for a while - maybe 45 minutes.  When  we got back to our yard, one of our cats was under the van with what appeared to be a mole.  This is nothing new as I have already discussed in the post on Mice and Moles.  What was strange was the very loud noises coming from the same direction - and I mean LOUD!  I slowly approached the car thinking that the cat was using the poor mole as a play toy.  But to my surprise, the mole was dead.  So what was that horrible sound?

I walked to the front of the van and realized that something was in the hood of my car!  I thought it might be a bird but I quickly realized that it was a creature from a larger animal family!  I popped the hood latch inside the car but decided against that - I certainly didn’t want the creature to jump out on me when I opened the hood or bite my finger when I released the hood latch.  So, I did what I thought best - I called my DH to see when he was coming home!  I held the phone up to the hood and let him listen to the ruckus.  Our discussion was pretty funny but he correctly discerned that it was a squirrel - as I suspected.  He had a few more things to do at work but told me to walk away and get the cats out of the area so that the squirrel could make an escape!  NO PROBLEM!

We went back to our gardening and waited for DH.  I had to get some supplies from the garage a little later and ’stopped by’ the van to check on the visitor.  I knocked on the hood and didn’t hear a things.  I was worried that the poor thing had died from the heat and felt terrible that I didn’t take action earlier.  DH got home and I gave him an update.  We just knew the squirrel had moved on so DH opened the hood to access the damage.  SURPRISE - The squirrel was still there and VERY mad!!!  DH propped the hood open with the push broom until he could get the regular holder in place without subjecting himself to a potential bite!

He tried to use the broom to persuade “Rocky” to exit the vehicle on his own, but to no avail.  He finally resorted to the water hose and blasted “Rocky” until he reluctantly moved out of my van.  He was still a VERY, VERY MAD little fox squirrel as he raced past the garage and into the woods - soaking wet from the unwelcome shower!

I hope he/she found a nice dry place to settle down!  And I hope he calls that new place, HOME!  But this isn’t the end of the story.  See part 2 for more.
